Blairsville, a borough in Indiana County on the Conemaugh River, sat in the heart of western Pennsylvania's coal and iron country in 1907. Coal mining and the railroads that hauled its output shaped daily life in the valley, and the Pennsylvania Railroad's line along the river linked the town to Pittsburgh to the west and to the east. Residents of the period would still have remembered the Johnstown Flood of 1889, which swept down the Conemaugh from upriver and reminded valley towns how closely their fortunes were tied to the river and its rail lines. By the early twentieth century, churches, schools, and the storefronts along the main streets gave the borough its settled, small-town character, while the mines and mills beyond its edges set the pace of work.
