State College, Pennsylvania, in 1922 was a small borough built around the Pennsylvania State College, the land-grant school that had grown up in the Nittany Valley of center County since the 1850s. Much of the town's life revolved around the campus, where students studied agriculture, engineering, and the mechanical arts alongside the liberal courses. Farming in the surrounding valley and the limestone country beyond it supplied local markets, and a short rail line linked the college town to Bellefonte, the county seat. The national ban on alcohol under Prohibition was in force that year, and the campus, like many college towns, kept its attention on football games, commencement, and the steady flow of students arriving each fall.
