Pennsylvania College in Gettysburg, photographed in 1913, sat on the edge of a town of several thousand in south central Pennsylvania. The college had been founded in 1832 under Lutheran auspices and trained many of the ministers, teachers and lawyers who served the surrounding region. That summer, the fiftieth anniversary of the battle drew aging veterans of both armies to the fields a short walk away, and the town filled with visitors. Everyday life still centered on farming, the courthouse square and the rail line that carried goods and students in and out. The campus view, made by local photographer W. H. Tipton, shows a school that residents knew as well as the battle that had given their town its name.
