Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in 1909 was a small county seat of a few thousand residents, whose living rested on farming, local trade, the railroad, and the schools and seminary on its streets. The town had been transformed by the battle of July 1863, when Union General John F. Reynolds was killed on the first day of fighting, and by the decades of veterans' visits that followed. Along the Chambersburg Pike, monuments to regiments and commanders marked the ground where the armies had clashed, and many of the men who had fought there were still alive, some returning to walk the fields. Visitors arriving by train found a town that knew itself mainly as the site of that battle, and the approach to the 1913 fiftieth-anniversary reunion was already shaping local talk about the battlefield.
