Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in 1909 was a small county seat of a few thousand residents, whose lives were shaped by the battle fought on and around its streets in July 1863. The town depended on its colleges, including Pennsylvania College and the Lutheran Theological Seminary, along with farming and trade in the surrounding Adams County countryside. Rail service, including the Western Maryland line that had reached the town in the 1880s, brought a steady stream of visitors who wanted to walk the fields where the Union and Confederate armies fought. Veterans' groups and states were placing their monuments across the ground, and the federal government had taken over the battlefield as a national military park in 1895. This view of the third day's fighting, when Pickett's Charge broke against the Union center on Cemetery Ridge, would have been recognized by townspeople and former soldiers alike as the battle's defining moment.
