Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in 1918 was a small farming market town of a few thousand residents, whose economy rested on agriculture, local trade, and the railroads that carried its produce and tourists. The battlefield had become a national park under federal management in 1895, and by the late 1910s its ground was dotted with monuments that Union and Confederate veterans and their home states had placed over the preceding decades. The United States was then fighting in the First World War, so residents read the battlefield's scars against news of troops and war bonds. Those who lived nearby knew the fields less as a distant history than as a place where elderly veterans returned and visitors came to walk the ground where the 1863 battle was fought.
