Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in 1913 was a small farm town that had grown up around its battlefield, and the National Cemetery on Cemetery Hill was the site people most associated with the town's past. The cemetery had been laid out in 1863 to hold the Union dead from the battle fought there that July, and Abraham Lincoln delivered his address at its dedication that November. The picture's year marked the fiftieth anniversary of the battle, when former soldiers of both armies returned in large numbers for a reunion on the old fields in early July 1913. Local hotels, boarding houses, and farms took in visitors, and the town's economy leaned heavily on that traffic and on the rhythm of the surrounding agricultural county. For residents, the cemetery's rows of headstones were a daily reminder of the cost of the battle and of the national meaning the town had acquired.
