Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in July 1913 was a small farming and college town of about 4,000 people, known nationally for the battle fought on its fields fifty years earlier. For the semicentennial, Congress and the state helped bring tens of thousands of Union and Confederate veterans to the battlefield, and tent camps like this one sheltered many of them on the fields around town. Local hotels, boarding houses, and farmhouses took in visitors, and the railroads carried crowds in and out during the reunion week. The most remembered moment came on July 4, when President Woodrow Wilson addressed the veterans, a gesture widely read as a step toward national reconciliation. For local residents, the event was both a commemoration and a test of how far a town of their size could feed and house a crowd many times its population.
