Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in 1909 was a small county seat of a few thousand residents, whose living came from farming, local trade, and the growing number of visitors drawn to the battlefield. Forty-six years after the fighting of July 2, 1863, Little Round Top still showed its boulders and wooded slopes, where Union soldiers of the 20th Maine held the southern end of the line under Joshua Chamberlain. Veterans returned in growing numbers, and the Gettysburg National Military Park Commission, created in 1895, was working to mark the lines with monuments and tablets. Townspeople knew their home for its Lutheran seminary and Pennsylvania College as much as for the battle, and the railroad carried both pilgrims and farm produce. The hill's rocky summit made it a favorite stop for sightseers.
