Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in 1909 was a small county seat of a few thousand residents, and its economy rested on farming, local trade, and a growing tourist traffic drawn by the battlefield that had been fought there in July 1863. The Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Association had been formed in the 1890s, and the National Park Commission was taking over the ground that decade, so the fields where Union and Confederate lines clashed on the second day were becoming a place of organized memory. Veterans returned in large numbers for reunions and anniversary gatherings, and the monuments they raised were dotting Seminary Ridge, Little Round Top, and the Wheatfield. This view of the second day's fighting would have been read by many visitors as a record of a national reconciliation as much as a military event.
