Devil's Den, on the southern edge of the Gettysburg battlefield in Adams County, Pennsylvania, was a place of pilgrimage as much as a historic site in 1909. Forty-six years earlier, Confederate sharpshooters from Alabama and Texas had fired from its jumbled granite boulders on July 2, 1863. The Gettysburg National Military Park Commission, created in 1895 to preserve the field and mark its lines, oversaw the ground by then. Veterans, their families, and other visitors reached the town by rail and carriage, and local hotels and guides had grown up around them. Gettysburg's everyday economy still rested mainly on farming, schooling, and the trade the battlefield brought in, and residents knew the rocky ridge as the scene of the battle's most punishing close fighting.
