Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in 1913 was a small county seat built on farming, orchards, and local trade, with a college and a Lutheran seminary and rail connections to nearby towns. That summer the town and surrounding fields hosted the fiftieth anniversary of the battle, drawing tens of thousands of aging Union and Confederate veterans who camped on the battlefield in long rows of canvas tents. The reunion was framed as a celebration of national reconciliation, and President Woodrow Wilson came to address the crowd, which drew wide newspaper coverage. For local residents, the encampment meant crowded streets, boarding houses full of visitors, and a reminder that the fields they farmed had seen some of the war's heaviest fighting.
