Pennsylvania College in Gettysburg, shown here in 1909, was a small Lutheran-affiliated liberal arts school that had been operating in the town since 1832. Its students and faculty lived in a community of a few thousand people whose economy rested on farming, local trade, and the rail line that carried goods and visitors into the county. The college stood a short walk from the Lutheran Theological Seminary, and the two institutions gave the town much of its academic character. Forty-six years after the great battle of July 1863, Gettysburg was also a place where veterans returned, monuments were being added to the fields, and the battle was part of everyday conversation for residents and the students who studied among them.
