Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, stood on the hill above a county seat of roughly 10,000 people in 1909. Founded in 1815 under Methodist auspices, it was among the oldest colleges in the state, and its campus anchored a town whose economy rested on manufacturing, including ironwork, furniture, and carriage and wagon production, as well as on the railroads that ran through the Erie and Pittsburgh corridors. Meadville residents of the period knew the college as a center of Methodist education and as a source of local pride, with its students, faculty, and church families shaping much of the town's social calendar. The early twentieth century brought new academic buildings and a steady stream of young men and, increasingly, young women to the campus, which had admitted women since the 1870s.
