In 1909, Exposition Park was the amusement and resort grounds on the shore of Conneaut Lake in Crawford County, in northwestern Pennsylvania. The lake, the largest natural lake in the state, drew summer visitors from Pittsburgh, Meadville, and smaller towns across the region, many arriving by rail and electric interurban lines that carried daytrippers and weekend excursionists. Its economy depended heavily on that seasonal trade, which supported bathhouses, boat rentals, dance halls, and concessions, while surrounding farms and small mills served the local population year-round. For the people who lived nearby, the park was less a single attraction than a summer gathering place, where families, church groups, and lodge members spent their free days along the water.
