Idlewild Park, in the Ligonier Valley of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, was a summer destination in 1923, when the valley's economy still rested mainly on coal mining, lumber, and farming. The park had grown up as a picnic grove and amusement ground served by rail from the industrial towns to the south and east, and crowds from the Pittsburgh region came out for outings, dances, and rides. By the early 1920s, automobiles and improved roads were beginning to change how families reached such places, though trains still carried many visitors. Ligonier itself was an old settlement, named for a colonial fort of 1758, and locals in 1923 would have known Idlewild as the valley's chief place for leisure and gatherings.
