Highland Park Zoo, pictured here in 1905, sat within the eastern Pittsburgh park that bore its name, a few years after the city had established its animal collection there. Pittsburgh in those years ran on steel, iron, glass and coal, with mills along its three rivers filling the sky with smoke and drawing immigrant workers from across Europe. As one of the largest industrial cities in the country, it had little open ground for its crowded neighborhoods, so parks like Highland Park offered families a place to escape the furnaces on weekends. Residents would have known the park for its animals, its reservoir and its broad lawns.
