Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in 1904 was still a mill town living in the shadow of the 1889 flood, which killed more than 2,000 people when the South Fork Dam gave way above the city. Cambria Steel was the largest employer in the valley, and its furnaces and rolling mills drew workers from Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, and other parts of Central and Southern Europe, giving the city a crowded, many-languaged neighborhood life. Residents climbed the hillsides on the Johnstown Inclined Plane, a cable car built in 1891, to reach the houses and churches above the river flats. The rebuilt downtown, the bridges across the Conemaugh and Stony Creek, and the steady sound of the mills were the things most people in the town would have recognized as Johnstown at the turn of the century.
