Conneaut Lake, in Crawford County in northwestern Pennsylvania, was in 1909 one of the state's best-known summer resorts. The lake is a large natural body of water, and visitors arrived by rail and interurban trolley from Pittsburgh, Meadville, and smaller towns across the region. Summer cottages, hotels, boathouses, and the amusement park along the shore drew families who came for a few days or the whole season, while year-round residents of the borough depended on the seasonal trade. Pittsburgh's industrial workforce, with its limited vacation time, made lakeside excursions an important part of working-class leisure in the years before the automobile changed how people travelled.
