In 1909, Pittsburgh was the center of American steel, with mills, rail yards, and coal barges crowding the rivers and turning the sky dark with smoke. Allegheny City had been annexed into Pittsburgh only two years earlier, in 1907, so the city was still absorbing neighborhoods and suburbs along its riverbanks. President William Howard Taft, in his first year in office after his March inauguration, visited the region that year, and an event at the Allegheny Country Club drew local business and civic leaders who wanted to be seen with him. For the men gathered on the club's grounds, the visit was a sign that Pittsburgh's industrial wealth had earned it a place on the national political stage.
