The United States Indian Industrial School at Carlisle, Pennsylvania, stood in 1909 as one of the best-known federal boarding schools for Native American children. Founder Richard Henry Pratt opened it in 1879 on the grounds of the old Carlisle Barracks, and he ran it on a policy of assimilation: students were required to cut their hair, wear uniforms, and speak English, while learning trades such as printing, tailoring, shoemaking, and farming. Through the outing system, students were placed with farm and town families in the surrounding countryside, and the school's football team, coached by Glenn "Pop" Warner, drew national attention, with Jim Thorpe among its players in these years. Enrollment ran to several hundred students drawn from dozens of tribes, many of whom were separated from their families for years.
