Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, sat on the Beaver River in Beaver County in 1909, and its economy rested on the water power that the river's drop provided to local mills and shops. The town was known for its cutlery works, which turned out knives and related goods for national markets, and its factories drew workers and families from surrounding farms and from abroad. Rail lines carried the town's products out and brought in raw materials, linking this small industrial center to larger markets to the east and west. Geneva College, which had moved to Beaver Falls from Ohio in 1880, gave the town an academic presence alongside its mills. Residents of 1909 would have known Beaver Falls first as a working river town whose fortunes rose and fell with its factories.
