In 1909, Reading was the seat of Berks County and a city of roughly 90,000 people, with its population close to the 100,000 mark it would approach by 1910. Its factories made hosiery and knit goods, and the city's shops and mills drew steady streams of workers from the farms of the surrounding countryside and from abroad. Many residents still spoke Pennsylvania German at home, and German-language churches, societies, and newspapers remained part of daily life. Local people would have recognized the city as a place where a long-settled Pennsylvania German community had become an industrial city, and this view shows the streets and rooftops that carried that change.
