Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1909 was one of the state's most important industrial cities, built on iron, hosiery, and railroad shops. The Reading Railroad, headquartered in the city, ran its locomotive and car works there, and the rail trade drew workers from across Berks County and from immigrant communities in eastern Pennsylvania. Silk and knitting mills also employed large numbers of women and children, and the city's textile output reached buyers far beyond the state. Reading's residents of that era would have known their town as a rail and manufacturing center that sat in the shadow of Mount Penn and the Schuylkill River valley.
