Philadelphia in 1913 was the third-largest city in the country, with roughly 1.5 million residents counted in the 1910 census, and its mills, shipyards and locomotive works still employed a large share of its workers. Reform-minded Mayor Rudolph Blankenburg had taken office in 1912, promising cleaner government after years of machine politics. Department stores such as Wanamaker's on Market Street drew shoppers from the surrounding counties, while trolley lines and the Broad Street Station carried commuters from rowhouse neighborhoods into the center. Baseball had also become a civic pastime, with the Athletics playing at Shibe Park in North Philadelphia before crowds on summer afternoons. The view shows a city that still called itself the Quaker City and measured its progress by the chimneys, rooftops and streetcar tracks spread below.
