Colver, in Cambria County in the bituminous coal country of west-central Pennsylvania, was a mining community in 1913, when its economy rested almost entirely on the coal seams that ran beneath the hills and the rail lines that carried the output out. Mining families there were largely immigrants and their children, many from Italy, Hungary, Poland, and other parts of southern and eastern Europe, who worked underground for wages set by the company that owned the houses they lived in. The town sat within a region still shaped by the 1889 Johnstown flood, which had destroyed much of the upper Conemaugh Valley only a short distance away and had left a lasting memory of how quickly a mill town or mining camp could be swept off its ground. For residents of 1913, Colver meant shift whistles, company stores, church picnics, and the constant rhythm of coal trains.
