Philadelphia in 1913 was the third-largest city in the United States, with about 1.5 million residents according to the 1910 census. Its economy rested on manufacturing: Baldwin Locomotive Works in the Spring Garden district, the William Cramp & Sons shipyard on the Delaware, and textile and hosiery mills in Kensington and Germantown. Electric streetcars and the elevated and subway lines along Market Street carried workers between factories, rowhouse neighborhoods, and the downtown stores. Residents who looked out over the river and the city's rooftops in this period knew Philadelphia as the "Workshop of the World," a label the city's manufacturers had long claimed for themselves.
