Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, in 1909 was a coal town at the center of the anthracite fields of the Wyoming Valley, where the Susquehanna River winds between ridges. Mining companies, breakers, and railroad lines shaped the local economy, and many residents worked underground or in the shops and yards that served the collieries. Luzerne County's seat, the city also drew immigrants from Wales, Ireland, Eastern Europe, and Italy, whose churches, fraternal societies, and parish schools gave its neighborhoods much of their character. Residents of the period would have known the place for its coal and for the older memory of the 1778 Battle of Wyoming, fought on the valley floor.
