Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1909 was a manufacturing city on the Schuylkill River, with a population near 100,000. Its economy rested on iron and steel, the railroad shops of the Philadelphia and Reading Railway, and a growing knitting and silk trade. The Textile Machine Works, shown here, supplied the mills around the city with the machinery they needed, so its fortunes rose and fell with the textile plants that bought from it. Reading residents of the period knew their city as a place where the whistles of factories and railroad yards marked the working day, and where many families depended on a single mill or shop for their wages.
