In 1909 Apollo was a small borough in Armstrong County, where the Kiskiminetas River ran past homes and works whose fortunes were tied to the Pittsburgh industrial district roughly thirty miles to the southeast. Coal from the surrounding hills supplied furnaces and rail yards across the valley, and many families moved between farm chores and wage work as the seasons and orders shifted. Kittanning, the county seat, was where local readers followed national debates over tariffs, organized labor and the Progressive reforms spreading through Pennsylvania politics. For people living in Apollo, daily life revolved around the rail line, the price of coal and the mail and goods that arrived on the trains, which linked a modest riverside town to the much larger region around it.
