Diamond Park sits at the center of Meadville, the county seat of Crawford County in northwestern Pennsylvania, and in 1909 it was the civic heart of a town that depended on its courthouse, its stores, and the trade of surrounding farms. The town lies along French Creek, and its position on the railroad lines of the region helped it move farm produce, lumber, and manufactured goods to larger markets. Allegheny College, founded in Meadville in 1815, gave the town a second identity as a place of learning, and students, faculty, and townspeople shared its streets and churches. Residents of the period knew the Diamond as the place where county business, Saturday marketing, political rallies, and holiday gatherings all came together.
