Exposition Park, on the North Side of Pittsburgh, was the home of the Pittsburgh ball club in August 1904, when this view was made. The city was the center of American iron and steel, with mills, furnaces, and rail yards running along the Monongahela, Allegheny, and Ohio rivers, and its air was thick with the smoke that workers and residents took for prosperity. The park had hosted the first modern World Series in October 1903, when Boston defeated the Pirates, so baseball fans in the city still talked about that October. Pittsburgh was also a city of immigrant neighborhoods, labor disputes, and fast growth, and a Saturday afternoon at the ballpark was one of the few shared pleasures that crossed the lines between mill hands and merchants.
