Sunbury and its neighbor Northumberland faced each other across the Susquehanna River, where the North and West Branches meet, in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, in 1904. The towns grew up around river and canal trade, and by the early twentieth century railroads were the main link to the coal fields to the north and west. Rail yards, shops, and the foundries and mills that served them employed a large share of the working population, and many residents crossed the river daily to reach their jobs. As the county seat, Sunbury drew people in for courthouse business, local merchants, and church and lodge gatherings. A view of the two towns together shows how closely the river, the ferry and bridge crossings, and the rail lines tied their daily lives to each other.
