Millersville Normal School, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, was in 1921 one of the state's oldest teacher-training schools, chartered in 1855 to prepare men and women for the classroom in a period when most rural and small-town schools were staffed by young teachers with little formal training. The borough of Millersville was a quiet farming community surrounded by some of the richest agricultural land in the state, and the school gave it a large share of its identity and its civic life. Students of that era trained in a campus of brick buildings arranged around open lawns, and they took part in literary societies, music, and athletics. Pennsylvania was then expanding its public school system, so graduates of places like Millersville were in steady demand across the commonwealth.
