Franklin and Marshall College, which grew out of the old Franklin Academy in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, sat in a city that in 1921 was still shaped by its manufacturing and railroad work. Lancaster's economy rested on cigar and tobacco production, silk and textile mills, and the Pennsylvania Railroad's local shops, and the city's workers and merchants depended on those employers. The years after the First World War brought returning veterans and new enrollments to the campus, and the surrounding Pennsylvania German farm country supplied the markets and farm trade that made Lancaster a regional center. For local families, the academy and college were a source of civic pride and a path to higher learning, and the campus itself was among the city's most recognizable landmarks.
