McCalls Ferry, in southern Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, was a small Susquehanna River village in 1911, a place named for the ferry that had crossed the river there for generations before bridges and dams reshaped the valley. The surrounding county was among the most productive farming regions in the state, with tobacco, dairy, grain, and livestock central to local livelihoods, and the river supplied water power for mills and a steady flow of rafted lumber and shad fishing. By 1911 the area was also drawing attention for the Holtwood hydroelectric development upstream, which signaled the coming of large-scale power generation along the Susquehanna. Residents of the village would have known it as a quiet river community tied to nearby Lancaster and the rail lines running through the county.
