Austin, in Potter County, Pennsylvania, was a small mill town in 1911, built around the lumber, tanning, and paper industries that drew on the surrounding forests. On the morning of September 30, 1911, after days of heavy rain, the dam on Freeman Run that held back water for the Bayless pulp and paper operation gave way, and a wall of water rushed down the narrow valley into the borough. The flood killed dozens of residents, and about 78 people are generally counted among the dead. The ruins shown here are the wreckage left behind as the town, its mills, and its homes were swept away, leaving residents to face a long and painful effort to clear debris, bury the dead, and rebuild.
