In 1911, Washington, Pennsylvania, sat on the old National Road about 25 miles southwest of Pittsburgh, and residents measured their town by the traffic moving through the Monongahela valley. Mines, mills, and rail lines in the Pittsburgh district kept money and jobs flowing through Washington County, and local merchants sold goods to farm families and mining households from the surrounding hills. Progressive-era concerns about streets, schools, and public health were gaining ground in small county seats like this one, and churches, fraternal lodges, and college students shaped social life downtown. A view of the town from that year would have shown a place its people knew as a county seat with growing industrial reach beyond its own borders.
