Austin, a lumber and pulp-mill town in Potter County in north-central Pennsylvania, was still rebuilding its economy on timber and tanning in 1911. On the evening of September 30, after days of heavy rain, the earthen dam holding back a reservoir above the borough gave way, and a torrent of water and debris swept down the narrow valley through the business district and the mill sites. Dozens of residents died, and many more lost homes, stores and rail-side property in minutes. The flood became one of the deadliest in the state's history, and for the people of the region the name Austin came to mean that night, not the town's lumber trade. Survivors and neighboring communities spent the following months clearing wreckage and deciding whether to rebuild in the same valley.
