Austin, a lumber and pulp-milling town in Potter County, Pennsylvania, was struck on September 30, 1911, when a dam built to hold water for the Bayless Pulp and Paper Company's operations gave way after days of heavy rain. The wall of water tore down the narrow valley through the business district and the mill district, killing dozens of residents and destroying many buildings. Austin's economy rested on timber, the mills that cut and processed it, and the workers and families who depended on them, so the loss fell on nearly everyone in the borough. This panoramic photograph, taken by Almeron Newman in 1911, records the town in the aftermath, when residents were clearing debris and deciding how to rebuild. The disaster became one of the region's best-known industrial catastrophes of the early twentieth century.
