In 1914, the Tomhicken Valley of northeastern Pennsylvania lay in the heart of the anthracite coal country, where mining, not farming, set the rhythm of daily life. Collieries, breakers, and rail spurs carried hard coal to markets across the Northeast, and families in the valley's small towns depended on the pay of miners and the jobs that supported them. Labor disputes, dangerous underground work, and the constant pull between company towns and independent communities shaped local politics that year. That summer, news from Europe, where war had broken out in August, soon raised questions about coal shipments and prices, though the valley's residents would have known the region first by its mines and their whistles.
