Austin, a lumber and pulp town in Potter County in north-central Pennsylvania, was struck on September 30, 1911, when the dam holding back the reservoir above the town gave way after days of heavy rain. The reservoir had been built to serve the pulp and paper mill and to store water for moving logs down the streams, so the town lived beside the industry that drove its payroll. The water tore through the narrow valley, destroying homes, mills, and businesses, and the death toll, usually given as 78, made it one of the deadliest dam failures in the state's history. Survivors and neighbors across the region spent the following months searching for the missing, clearing debris, and deciding whether and how to rebuild. The disaster remained a local reference point for decades, and the flood's name still stood for the town in Pennsylvania memory.
