Austin, a borough in Potter County in north-central Pennsylvania, depended in 1911 on lumber, tanning, and a pulp mill that drew on the surrounding forests. On September 30 of that year, the earthen dam that held back a reservoir above the town gave way after days of heavy rain, and a wall of water poured down Freeman Run into the valley. The flood destroyed much of the business district and killed roughly 78 residents, and the town spent the following months digging out and rebuilding along the stream. This photograph shows the lumber yards in the aftermath, when wreckage still lay across what had been a working town.
