In 1921, Franklin and Marshall College stood on its hilltop campus in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, a city then known for tobacco and cigar making, metalworking, and the Pennsylvania Railroad shops that employed many local families. The college traced its roots to Franklin College, chartered in 1787, and it had merged with Marshall College in 1853, so by the early twentieth century it was among the oldest institutions in the state. Lancaster residents of the period also knew their city for its German heritage, its Pennsylvania Dutch farm country around it, and its civic pride in long-established schools and churches. Nationally, the country was in the first year after the end of World War I, and the Eighteenth Amendment's prohibition of alcohol had been in force since 1920. The view captures a campus that connected a small, settled city to the wider changes of the postwar years.
