Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1910 was a manufacturing city of roughly 40,000 people in the heart of Lancaster County's farmland. Its economy rested heavily on cigar making, which employed large numbers of workers in shops across the city, and on the railroad, whose yards and shops tied the town to larger markets. Residents also took pride in the city's past: the Continental Congress had met there briefly in September 1777 before fleeing British troops advancing on Philadelphia. This view shows the grid of streets, church spires, and factory roofs that made up the town as its people knew it before the First World War.
