In 1917, Easton, Pennsylvania, was preparing for a national change as the United States entered the First World War that April. Its rail yards and river wharves were busy with freight bound for the industrial towns up the Lehigh Valley, and Bethlehem Steel's enormous output at nearby Bethlehem was shipping munitions and steel to the Allies. Local residents would have felt the war through rising demand at the valley's mills, shortages of labor as young men enlisted or were drafted, and the first wartime appeals for bonds and food conservation. The panorama captures a city of brick rowhouses, commercial blocks, and church steeples on a rising slope, at a moment when its everyday life was closely tied to the distant war effort.
