Independence Square in Philadelphia, shown here in 1917, sat at the heart of a city that was then one of the largest manufacturing centers in the United States, with mills, shipyards, textile works and rail yards spread across its neighborhoods. The square was the site of Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution had been adopted, so visitors and residents alike treated the green as a civic landmark and a place of national memory. In 1917 the United States was newly at war in Europe, and Philadelphians were turning out for Liberty Loan drives and war bond rallies, while the city's population had grown past one and a half million. Local people of the period knew the square as the cradle of American independence, a status the surrounding downtown of office buildings and streetcar lines made feel close at hand.
