Philadelphia in 1891 was one of the largest cities in the United States, with about a million residents, and its economy depended on the Delaware River. Shipyards, sugar refineries, textile and iron mills, and rail yards lined the waterfront, and ships needed a deep, clear channel to reach the wharves. Work to clear obstructions such as the island shown here was part of an effort to keep that channel navigable for the larger vessels of the period. Dredging and removal projects like this were closely watched by the shipping firms, dock workers, and city officials who relied on river trade. For the people who lived along the river, the water was a daily source of jobs, freight, and noise, and changes to its shoreline were news.
