Philadelphia in 1872 was among the largest manufacturing cities in the country, with textile mills, iron works, locomotive shops, and sugar refineries crowded along the Schuylkill and Delaware rivers. The Schuylkill was both a working waterway and a source of drinking water, and the city's Fairmount Water Works, completed decades earlier on the river's banks, pumped water to households across the city. Riverfront views like this one would have been familiar to residents who rowed, fished, and walked the riverbanks on summer evenings. The city was also in the middle of a long period of expansion, having consolidated with its surrounding districts into one municipality in 1854, and its population had grown past 600,000 by the time this view was taken.
