Easton, Pennsylvania, in 1896 sat where the Lehigh River meets the Delaware, a position that had shaped the town since the canal era. The Delaware and Lehigh canals converged there, and by the 1890s the Lehigh Valley Railroad's lines and shops had made the town an important link for moving coal, iron, and manufactured goods out of the Lehigh Valley. Factories, foundries, and silk and textile works employed many of the town's residents, and Northampton County's courthouse and business district served as the center of local government and commerce. Lafayette College, on the hills above the town, gave Easton a student population and a civic identity that residents tied closely to the river valley below. Across the Delaware, the neighboring town of Phillipsburg, New Jersey, shared bridges, ferries, and daily commuting traffic with Easton.
